Committee for the Environment

Welcome to the Home Page of the Committee for the Environment. The committee was established to advise and assist the Minister of the Environment, Mark H Durkan MLA, on matters within his responsibility as a Minister. The committee undertakes a scrutiny, policy development and consultation role with respect to the Department of the Environment and plays a key role in the consideration and development of legislation. The Committee Chairperson is Ms Anna Lo.

Latest News

The Committee for the Environment will next meet on Thursday 27 November 2014 at 10.00am in the Senate Chamber, Parliament Buildings when the Committee will be briefed by the Department on its draft Budget for 2015/16.

The Committee will then receive a briefing from NIIRTA on Planning and Local Government, before moving on to consider the clauses of the Road Traffic (Amendment) Bill.

Local Government Bill - Committee Stage

The Committee has now completed its scrutiny of the Local Government Bill – read its Report on the Bill here.

Road Traffic (Amendment) Bill - Committee Stage

The Road Traffic (Amendment) Bill was formally introduced to the Northern Ireland Assembly on 12 May 2014 and received its Second Reading on 27 May 2014. The Bill has now been referred to the Committee for the Environment which has responsibility for the Committee Stage of the Bill.

The Committee has issued a written call for evidence in order to assist it with the scrutiny of the Bill.

Committee looks into the impact of Wind Energy

The Committee for the Environment initially agreed on 10 October 2013 to carry out a short Review of wind energy issues after hearing from a range of stakeholders over recent months. The Committee subsequently agreed that it would not complete this Review, but that it would instead carry out a full inquiry into this topic.

The Terms of Reference have been agreed and the Committee made a formal call for evidence which ended on 28 February 2014 – view submissions received here.

The Committee will consider this evidence over the next few months and will report later in the year.
