Welcome to the Home Page of the Committee for Employment and Learning. The committee was established to advise and assist the Minister for Employment and Learning, Dr Stephen Farry MLA, on matters within his responsibility as a Minister. The committee undertakes a scrutiny, policy development and consultation role with respect to the Department for Employment and Learning and plays a key role in the consideration and development of legislation. The Committee Chairperson is Robin Swann MLA.

The Committee for Employment and Learning will next meet at 01:00pm on Wednesday 3 December, 2014 in the Mellon Country Hotel, 134 Beltany Road, Omagh when the Committee will hear evidence on its Inquiry into post Special Educational Need Provision in education, employment and training for those with Learning Disabilities.

Committee Hosts Belfast Met Fashion Show at Parliament Buildings

The Committee for Employment and Learning recently hosted Belfast Metropolitan College’s end of year fashion show. The event which took place in the beautiful and ornate surroundings of the Great Hall, Parliament Buildings brought together some of the College’s most talented fashion students who showcased their original and stunning creations. 

Over 200 invited guests were treated to a catwalk extravaganza which included show-stopping evening gowns and award winning bridal wear, students and staff from the Belfast Met’s Hair and Beauty department were also on hand to create unique styles to compliment the fashions. 

Speaking after the event, Committee Chairperson Robin Swann said:  “The Committee was delighted to play host to the Belfast Met fashion show 2014.  For the second year in a row, the Great Hall at Parliament Buildings has provided the backdrop for an inspiring display of creativity and cutting-edge fashion.  The students and staff of Belfast Met can be extremely proud - this show has come about as a result of their talent, hard work and dedication.  For the Committee, it’s a perfect example of what can be achieved when students are given the support to realise their vision and develop their talents.”

Work and Families Bill - Committee Stage

The Work and Families Bill was formally introduced to the Northern Ireland Assembly on 28 April 2014 and received its Second Reading on 12 May 2014. The Bill has now been referred to the Committee for Employment and Learning which has responsibility for the Committee Stage of the Bill.

Inquiry into Post Special Educational Need Provision in Education, Employment and Training for those with Learning Disabilities

The Committee is undertaking an inquiry into post Special Educational Need (SEN) Provision in education, employment and training for those with Learning Disabilities in Northern Ireland. 

Please note that the deadline for those who would like to submit evidence on the inquiry is 30 June 2014.
